Sarah was quite nervous about her first driving lesson. She had been attending the driving classes for a few weeks now, but this would be her first time in the drivers seat of a car. She had spent most of the morning studying her manual and making sure she was fluent in all of the standard traffic laws.
Her instructor was late. She sat impatiently in the lobby chair, tapping her foot on the ground. Her palms were sweaty and her heart was racing. What if she didn't pass?
Finally, a stout mustached man walked in with a clipboard. "Are you ready for your driving lesson?" he said. She nodded eagerly and followed him outside.
The man stepped up to a very worn looking tan car and held out the keys. She took them without hesitation. She got into the car and took a deep breath as she turned the key. The car started with a sputter. For a brief moment, she forgot what she needed to do next. Commanding herself to calm down and think, she remembered from her driving course that she needed to buckle her seat belt first and foremost. She did, and then shakily reached to shift the car into "drive". Her foot pressed gently on the gas, and she pulled out slowly into traffic.
She was driving! motoring along down the street just like any other person might. It was surreal.
Her instructor scribbled away at his clipboard, not saying a word. She thought she was doing alright. What could he be writing? She thought she may be less nervous if they weren't sitting there in silence, so she reached for the radio knob. Her instructor quickly moved her hand away and said ,"During you first driving lesson, I suggest that you focus on the road."
She felt embarrassed at the comment, even though she didn't really think she had done anything wrong. Her mother always listened to the radio when she drove.
She approached a stop light and her heart began to race again. She slowed down as smoothly as possible and made sure to leave plenty of room between her car and the car in front of her. When the light turned green, her instructor motioned for her to turn right and back into the school parking lot.
She parked the car and waited for instruction. Finally, after a couple more minutes of scribbling, the man said "Well done. See you next week."
She smiled excitedly and got out of the car where he mother was waiting nervously. "So how was your first driving lesson?" she said.
"Amazing! I can't wait for next week!"
